A performer from Heroine City, who are bringing the past to life at Ayscoughfee Hall and Gardens
Dear reader, as someone who appreciates the finer things in life, Ayscoughfee Hall & Gardens cordially invites you to join us for Ayscoughfee Enlightenment: An 18th-Century Pleasure Garden Revival.
Prepare to be dazzled, delighted, and transported back in time as the serene gardens of Ayscoughfee Hall, Spalding, transform into an 18th-century pleasure garden on the evenings of March 21st and 22nd, 2025. With the glow of lanterns, the enchanting strains of period music, and a captivating array of entertainments, this unique two-night event promises to be a feast for the senses and an unforgettable experience brought to you as a Story Tellers collaboration with historical production house, Heroine City.
Step into the Past
The gardens will come alive with the spirit of the Enlightenment era, recreating the vibrant atmosphere of historic pleasure gardens such as Vauxhall and Ranelagh. Stroll through tree-lined avenues illuminated by twinkling lanterns, marvel at the historically inspired décor, and take in the sights and sounds of a bygone age.
From the moment you enter, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into an 18th-century painting. Costumed actors and performers will weave through the crowds, bringing the past vividly to life. Expect witty repartee from strolling poets, impromptu performances by foppish aristocrats, and glimpses of scandalously fashionable Georgian attire.
A Feast for the Senses
Ayscoughfee Enlightenment is a celebration of the culture, creativity, and conviviality that defined the pleasure gardens of old. With themed sections dedicated to the four elements, Air, Water, Earth, Fire, visitors can look forward to:
Exquisite Music and Dance: Be enchanted by the dulcet tones of live baroque music performed by opera stars, roaming troubadours and the Rose Quartet. Dance troupes will invite guests to learn the elegant steps of Georgian court dances, offering everyone a chance to embrace the spirit of the time.
Theatrical and Artistic Displays: Enjoy performances ranging from comedic sketches to dramatic excerpts from 18th-century plays. Witness stunning fire acts and close-up origami and participate in interactive activities in the Air section of the garden’s ‘Enlightenment Forum’ inspired by the movement’s emphasis on creativity and intellectual exploration.
Local Artist Installations: Marvel at the artistry of local creators, including whimsical displays in the canal area by Ms Nicki Jarvis and enchanting crafted boxes in the peace garden by Ms Liz Kelleher. These 18th-century-inspired installations will bring unique vibrancy to the gardens.
Illuminated Nightscapes: As night falls, the gardens will sparkle with the soft glow of thousands of lanterns. Explore the romantic bowers and enchanting pathways that provide the perfect backdrop for a magical evening… and, if you dare, take the dark walk to the whimsical grotto to meet with a local folklore legend.
Culinary Delights
No pleasure garden experience is complete without delectable refreshments! The Pavillion Café will offer a selection of period-inspired ‘on-the-go’ treats and drinks to suit all palates. So, raise a glass as you mingle under the stars!
