This year’s theme: Adventure & Exploration

The theme for Lightwaves 2025 is Adventure and Exploration. Inspired by the voyages of Lincolnshire’s own Sir Joseph Banks, the famous botanist and explorer. Sir Joseph Banks was a naturalist, botanist and patron of the natural sciences and raised on the edge of the Lincolnshire Fens.

Lightwaves celebrates the spectacle of discovery, inviting families and visitors to embark on imaginative journeys through Lincolnshire’s history, told through light displays and coastal parades.

Lincolnshire has a rich heritage of exploration, from maritime voyages to scientific expeditions.

Community Lantern Workshops

In the weeks leading up to the event, local schools and community groups are taking part in lantern making workshops. Lanterns will be designed around the themes of exploration and scientific curiosity - bringing the spirit of Sir Joseph Banks’ adventures to life in creative ways. These workshops will allow families and young people to get hands on with the arts and creativity.
